Prepositions

A preposition is a word used to connect nouns, pronouns, or phrases to other words within a sentence. They act as "directional signs," helping you understand the relationship between different people, places, and objects.

Essentially, prepositions tell you where something is or when something is happening.

What do Prepositions describe?

Prepositions generally fall into three main categories:

  • Place/Position: They show where something is located.

    • Example: The cat is on the table. The keys are inside the bag.

  • Time: They show when something happens.

    • Example: We will meet at 5:00 PM. My birthday is in December.

  • Direction: They show the movement of something.

    • Example: She walked across the bridge. He threw the ball toward the hoop.
